“Crabs and Chocolate” is the latest itineration in Li Xiaofei’s “Assembly Line,” project. “Assembly line began in 2010, and in his investigation of the industrial, Li has visited hundreds of factories in the Yangtze River Delta Region. The show will feature a few of these works—a mesmerizing textile factory, and some intimate close-ups of workers Guangzhou.

Assembly Line – A Packet of Salt: Li Xiaofei in Wellington

The Assembly Line films by Li Xiaofei deliberately mix artistic and documentary language. Images of the people and machines are constantly being juxtaposed, restructured, transformed and rebuilt into a provocative movement. The work investigates a number of interconnected problematics  including the relationship between labour and management; people and machine, factory as well as the individual's relationship to collectivity. A Packet of Salt is significant in Li Xiaofei's work since it develops both a poetic and critical vein that has been less evident in his previous work

Assembly Line – A Packet of Salt is on display at Toi Poneke Arts Centre, Wellington, New Zealand, opening 17 Oct 2013 at 5:30pm. The exhibition is open to the public until 9 Nov 2013. More info here and here.

Assembly Line by Li Xiaofei
